Material for the Spine, Contact Improvisation

Picture
Material for the Spine, a system of movement patterns developed by Steve Paxton involving sensations of the skeleton, reflex, inherent spirals of human movement, perfect forms, energy extension and relationship with gravity. Many specific exercises point to experiences that reveal useful and unusual ways for moving and improvising.

Contact Improvisation originated by Steve Paxton and others in 1972, is a form Karen has been practicing, teaching and performing since 1977. She considers this foundational movement technique to be a boon to any dancer or person who enjoys moving – in solo or with a partner/s.

Unimaginable ~ Flow ~ Resonance follows an embodied journey of Contact Improvisation from before it was imaginable thru the discovery of flow and onwards towards resonance. During Unimaginable we attend to the sensations of falling, momentum and reflex in solo and with a partner. In Flow we open to sustaining connection without losing the fresh taste of gravity, autonomy, and “the third thing” that is shared between the partners. With Resonance we expand into space, nurture inner and outer spirals, puzzles of the spine, and using gravity’s kind support to fly. Further enhancing our practice we will use Tuning Scores as a way to support dances in space.

The main emphasis is awareness of moving in sensation, embodiment and pleasure of moving/dancing with self and other.
