Info about the dance we are fundraising for 👇

Hello Friends,

We, K.J. and Karen, send greetings to you all near and far~  As we all are celebrating CI @ 50, we think of our shared dance, we want to let you know what’s up.

We are creating a project called “Redux Forward”, set to happen  this summer in 3 places: Vashon Island (Hanna Barn and Open Space), Vancouver, B.C. (Western Front/EDAM) and Oberlin, (Critical Mass). “Redux Forward” includes two aspects. We are reprising our 1991 duet “Swim/Sea/No See”, and we will facilitate “CI interrogates and tunes itself”, a participatory lec-dem, ritual, jam event.  Here is more info Redux Forward.

This letter is asking for support you might contribute towards this project.

The sudden thought of creating and performing “Swim/Sea/No See” —again, for the first time—and bringing forth “CI Interrogates and tunes itself”, coincided with the 50-year celebration, the relaxation of social distancing, and a futuristic-minded restart of our dance cultures emerging out of these crisis times. We feel a retrospective looping of past and future might align with desires of our communities. Western Front, EDAM, as well as O space, Hanna Barn and Critical Mass are on the same wavelength.

“Swim/Sea/No Sea” is a duet we performed from 1991-93 in N. America, Europe and S. America. What does a redux of an improvisation become after 30 years? Here is a take of our score:  “Without sacrificing the primal power and reflexive responses of CI’s play with gravity, momentum and trust, they created a cinema of the body using editing principles gleaned from Tuning Scores as well as through constant questionings about musicality and the theater of dance.”

Here is a 12 min video containing clips of 3 shows we did in Seattle, Caracas, and Boulder, CO; & here is a 15 min. clip of the Boulder showing.

“CI interrogates itself”, in its 2022 version, begins the telling of  CI history with a  video clip “Evidently Material for the Spine (2000)” of Emery Blackwell and Steve Paxton working in Hanna Barn studio on Vashon Island, before Diverse Dance Research Retreat’s last burst. The event also uses footage of Diverse Dance as a jumping off point and visual backdrop for each participant who wishes to share their origin or identity story of coming to CI, as they then also enter the ongoing jam.

We are hoping to raise approximately $2,200 to cover travel, honorariums, and meals.  One of our benefactors is offering us  25-day residency at Hanna Barn, and saving us great expense on housing, studio rental, and back-up performance/gathering spaces. If you can contribute any amount , we gratefully accept your financial help. We also appreciate  any other suggestions of who we might approach for donations. We can use a fiscal sponsor for larger donations to be tax-deductible as needed.

We revel in our shared dance and celebrate us all celebrating—🎉50 years of Contact Improvisation!
